How to sign a PDF
To sign a PDF, open the file in the signer above and choose Signature. Draw your signature with the mouse, a trackpad or your finger, or type your name and pick a handwriting style. Choose Place signature, then click the page where it belongs. It lands at the size of a pen signature on paper, and you can drag it or pull its corners until it sits on the line.
- Choose a PDF or drop it on the signer. Files up to 50 MB open.
- Choose Signature and draw, type or upload it. Keep “Remember on this device” ticked to reuse it next time.
- Click the page to place it, or click a “Sign here” box to drop it straight into a signature field.
- Add Initials and Date where the document asks for them. Use Text for anything else, like your printed name.
- Choose Download to save a copy with “-signed” added to the name.
02
Draw, type or upload your signature
Drawing gives the most natural result. The pad is drawn at your screen's full resolution, so strokes stay sharp when the PDF is zoomed or printed. Black and dark blue ink are offered, the two colours people sign in on paper. Whatever you draw is trimmed to the ink itself, so there is no blank margin to work around when you place it.
Typing is quicker and neat on any device: enter your name and choose between three handwriting styles. Uploading suits a signature you already have as a picture, such as a scan of you signing a sheet of white paper. A PNG with a transparent background looks best, because the page shows through around the strokes.
03
Add initials and the date
Leases, loan papers and terms of business often ask for initials on every page and a date beside the signature. Initials work like a signature, made and remembered on their own and placed smaller. Date opens a short list with today's date in common formats, such as 03/07/2026, 07/03/2026, 2026-03-07 or March 7, 2026. Pick one and click the page to put it there.
The date is ordinary text, so you can move it, change its size or font, or edit it to a different day. The signer remembers which format you chose last and lists it first next time.
04
Sign in a signature field
Forms made in Acrobat or Word often include signature fields: boxes that mark where to sign. The signer finds them on every page and outlines each empty one with a “Sign here” button. Clicking it opens your signature and fits it inside the box, centred and in proportion, so it never spills over the lines around it.
Once a field holds a signature the button goes away. If you undo the signature, it comes back. Other form fields, such as text boxes and checkboxes, can be filled in the same session by clicking them.
05
Electronic signatures and digital signatures
What the signer makes is an electronic signature: your signature as a picture, placed on the page and saved into it. It is the online version of printing a document, signing it with a pen and scanning it back, and it is what most everyday paperwork asks for, from rental applications to permission slips and freelance contracts.
A digital signature is something else: a cryptographic seal made with a certificate, which a PDF reader can check to show who signed and that nothing changed afterwards. Some contracts, public tenders and government forms require one. The signer does not make digital signatures, so if a document asks for one, use the service the sender names.
06
Why it runs in your browser
A signature is personal, and the documents people sign are often contracts, bank forms and ID papers. The signer opens them inside your browser tab with MuPDF, a PDF engine compiled to run on the web page itself. No page and no signature is sent to pdfly. Remembered signatures are kept in this browser's storage only, and clearing your browser data removes them. The signer is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license, and the link to its code sits at the bottom of the tool.
When you download, the signature is merged into the page content, the same way a printed signature is part of the paper. Anyone opening the file sees it in every PDF reader, and it cannot be dragged off or copied as a separate object.
07
After signing
A signed PDF is about the size of the original. If an upload form or an email still rejects it, use the PDF compressor to bring it under the size you need. To reorder, rotate, or delete pages before or after signing, use the organizer. If the text itself needs a fix, edit the text in a PDF with the editor. To send it with other documents as one file, merge PDFs under a size limit.
08
Limits
The signer opens one PDF up to 50 MB. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened; remove the password first. It makes electronic signatures, not certificate-based digital signatures, and it does not send documents to other people to sign. There is no account, and apart from signatures you choose to remember in this browser, nothing is kept after you close the tab.
